Retirement Happiness

Many of us who look forward to retirement think of bliss and happiness, however, the truth is that once we enter retirement phase, reality and expectation are most likely out of phase.

So, why is this?

First, most retirees fail to plan their retirement, this includes goals, expectations, and desired outcomes.

The notion of not working anymore, or having a boss overseeing you, or even being the boss of your own business might sound enticing, unless you’re prepared, retirement can be a daunting and challenging phase of your life.

What makes people happiest in retirement?

It can vary from person to person, but there are a variety of strategies you can use to retire happy.

While health conditions and living situations can change, you have many opportunities to set your own path and make the most of your retirement at every step.

Here are some ideas to make your retirement more pleasant and happy.

Set Goals

You may have had firm objectives during your working years, such as striving for a promotion or hitting a milestone for the number of years worked.

To retire happy, think about having new goals, which can motivate you to accomplish tasks.

Find Your Passion

Having someone to talk openly with can help you avoid high levels of stress and anxiety.

We all have a passion and during our working lives, we may have neglected or brushed aside these passions.

Now is the time to delve into what you always wanted to do; from model railways, travelling the country to scuba diving!

As long as you’ve planned for your retirement and set aside the funds needed for your retirement, this will be the best the best time of your life, guaranteed.

Stay Connected

Disconnecting from family and friends is about the worst thing you can do.

Human interaction, socially and emotionally, is the single most important element of life.

This means staying in touch with your family and friends.  It may mean you taking the initiative to make contact, which is fine.  If you connect and meet up with the ‘clan’, you will at least be in touch.

Also, joining groups which resonate with your interests is very important, if you love hiking or bush walks, then join a similar group – you may not hang with them all the while, however, at least you’ll share an experience that is common to both.

Focus on Your Health

With a schedule that is more flexible, you may find it easier to cook meals at home and get enough sleep.

Regular activity such as walks, swimming or group sports could help you stay in good physical condition.

Now is also the time to keep up with regular medical appointments and ask about preventive treatments.

Ageing is a natural part of life as we get older, however, that doesn't mean we should ignore our health.

Regular checkups with your GP/Specialist is a must to ensure that all is well – simply knowing this gives us peace of mind to continue with our retirement journey.

Focus on what’s important to you – who do you want to love, how do you want to live, what do you want to learn, and what legacy do you want to leave.

Again, there are many ways to ensure happiness in your retirement, if you’re approaching retirement age or are in your retirement phase and would like to find out more, contact us or call us, Parkside InvestorPlus (02) 9899 4899.
